As Kogi State approaches the 2027 gubernatorial election, it faces a crucial political moment. This is a time for deep reflection, not for politics based on slogans, narrow ambitions, or party manoeuvring. This moment should be rooted in justice, fairness, and the long-term stability of the state.
In communities, among traditional leaders, political stakeholders, and knowledgeable opinion leaders, a clear and consistent message is coming through: it is time for Kogi West Senatorial District to produce the next Governor of Kogi State.
This demand is not sentimental or just a result of usual political negotiations. It is based on fairness, historical balance, and the need for inclusive governance. Since Kogi State was created in 1991, political leadership has only rotated between Kogi East and Kogi Central. Kogi East has produced governors who led the state for over sixteen years, while Kogi Central has taken two full terms and currently holds the seat of power. Throughout this time, Kogi West—despite its strong population, intellectual depth, electoral value, and political loyalty—has never had the chance to govern the state.
Yet, Kogi West has been crucial to the survival and stability of successive governments. The district has consistently mobilized votes, built party structures, formed alliances across senatorial districts, and supported administrations, often at significant political cost. Time and again, Kogi West has been asked to delay its ambitions for the sake of unity.
Kogi West is rich in talent and leadership ability. The district has produced experienced professionals in the banking sector, legislators, technocrats, administrators, and nationally respected leaders who have served Kogi State and Nigeria well. Its demand is not for handouts or special favours, but for fair access to leadership, the right to lead a state it has helped to build, sustain, and stabilize.
Equity is not the same as generosity; it is about justice. History shows that ignoring legitimate calls for fairness leads to political alienation, erodes voter confidence, and creates long-term instability. Kogi State can not afford such a path.
Beyond zoning issues, the case for Kogi West is also strengthened by competence and readiness. The district has credible leaders with proven experience in governance, economic management, security, and grassroots mobilization. This is why the call for Kogi West resonates beyond its own borders. More voices from Kogi East and Kogi Central are recognizing a simple truth: fairness aligns with proven leadership capacity.
Therefore, the year 2027 represents both a moral and strategic turning point for Kogi State, a choice between repeating historical imbalances or correcting them; between short-term political gains and lasting unity. Allowing Kogi West to lead is not a concession. It is a wise, stabilizing decision that promotes inclusion, rebuilds trust, and strengthens the foundation of the state.
The people of Kogi are not asking for the impossible. They seek balance, respect, justice, and a genuine sense of belonging for every senatorial district.
As 2027 approaches, the message grows stronger, more legitimate, and urgent:
It is time for Kogi West to govern Kogi State.
