Disappearing Opposition: Tinubu’s Genius or Clueless Parties, Banwo Asks

Political analyst, Dr. Ope Banwo, has questioned the apparent disappearance of opposition political parties in the country, asking whether it is the result of President Bola Tinubu’s political genius or the failure of opposition parties.

Banwo raised the poser in a recent video statement released from his base in the United States.

According to him, recent political developments suggest that the ruling establishment has been actively strengthening its influence through alliances and engagement with key political actors across the country.

“While others are talking, the president appears to be building—quietly and systematically,” he said.

He noted that governors remain central to electoral success in Nigeria, adding that efforts to maintain strong relationships with state-level actors could significantly shape future political outcomes.

Banwo said there are indications of increasing collaboration between members of the ruling party and some opposition figures, a trend he noted reflects the fluid nature of Nigerian politics.

“In this environment, today’s opponent can become tomorrow’s ally,” he stated.

He also pointed to federal appointments, projects, and policy decisions as tools that can influence political loyalty and alignment across regions.

Banwo argued that long-standing political networks built over time continue to play a crucial role in shaping influence within the system.

“Political relationships developed over decades do not disappear overnight. They often become assets in moments like this,” he said.

Despite these observations, he maintained that the effectiveness of such strategies is amplified by the challenges within opposition ranks, particularly the lack of coordination and a unified direction.

He warned that if current trends persist, the ruling party could gain further advantage heading into the next election cycle.

However, Banwo noted that Nigerian politics remains dynamic and that shifts could still occur if opposition actors reorganise and build a cohesive structure.

“The political space is still open, but it requires deliberate effort and strategic alignment,” he added.
