For decades, the Fagba-Agege railway corridor was a symbol of that fragility. Traders, shanties, and waste had swallowed the tracks. Trains crawled when they moved at all. Warnings were issued. Deadlines passed. Nothing changed.

Therefore when CSP Akerele Adetayo assumed office as Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Taskforce two years ago, many expected business as usual: press briefings, short-lived sweeps, and a return to chaos. What Lagos got instead was a legacy that many now describe as “beyond human comprehension” — not because it defies logic, but because it defied expectations.

The Lagos Taskforce is not a ceremonial unit. It sits at the intersection of law, environment, and urban sanity. Its mandate cuts across illegal structures, traffic robbery hotspots, environmental infractions, and criminal hideouts. It is the state’s rapid-response tool for restoring order where it has broken down.

Today, trains run through Fagba-Agege without obstruction. Residents who once described the area as “no-go” now walk the corridor at dusk. The Nigerian Railway Corporation publicly commended the operation, calling it the most effective intervention in a decade.

Under Akerele, the Taskforce intensified raids on traffic robbery hotspots across Oshodi, Mile 2, Ikeja Along, and Ojota. Hundreds of suspects were arrested. Weapons were recovered. Dislodged gangs found it harder to regroup because follow-up patrols became routine, not reactive.

The Taskforce also tackled environmental crimes with new vigor. Illegal dredging sites, blocked canals, and street trading on major highways all came under scrutiny. At Oyingbo and Yaba, years of congestion caused by roadside trading eased after coordinated clearance and the relocation of traders to designated markets.

Okada enforcement was another flashpoint. While the ban on commercial motorcycles on major highways predated him, compliance had waned. The numbers tell part of the story. Over 1,200 illegal structures removed across the metropolis. More than 5,000 motorcycles impounded on restricted routes. Dozens of criminal hideouts dismantled. Response time to distress calls cut from hours to minutes in high-priority zones.

But the real measure, residents say, is in feeling. A shop owner in Pen Cinema put it simply: “Before, we closed by 6pm because of boys. Now we close by 9pm. That extra three hours is school fees.”

Challenges remain.that Lagos grows by nearly 3,000 people every day. Pressure on space, roads, and infrastructure is relentless. Clearing a spot today guarantees nothing if the underlying economics that drove illegality remain.

Akerele acknowledges this during a media briefing that His next phase, he says, is deeper collaboration — with the Media, physical planning, waste management, transportation, and the judiciary. “Enforcement is the last bus stop,” he notes. “The goal is to make sure fewer people ever get on that bus.”

For now, his two-year scorecard has reset the bar for what Lagosians expect from the Taskforce. From the rail lines of Fagba-Agege to the under-bridges of Oshodi, the message has been consistent: the law can work, and it can work for everyone.
