Osun Election: Banwo Urges Opposition to Build Stronger Coalition Ahead of 2027
Social critic and founder of Naija Lives Matter, Dr. Ope Banwo, has urged opposition political parties to put aside individual ambitions and work towards building a stronger political coalition ahead of the 2027 general election.
Banwo said the opposition would need a coordinated strategy and a broad alliance if it intends to mount a serious challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the next presidential election.
Speaking in his analysis of the Osun State governorship election and its wider political implications, Banwo argued that opposition parties should focus on areas of common interest rather than allowing individual political ambitions to weaken their collective strength.
According to him, the ability of different opposition groups to work together could be crucial to determining whether they are able to present a formidable alternative to the ruling party in 2027.
Banwo said political parties should begin discussions early on the possibility of strategic alliances, including the development of a common platform capable of attracting voters from different political backgrounds.
He argued that opposition politicians should be prepared to negotiate and make compromises where necessary if their objective is to build a broad coalition.
The social critic also cautioned against allowing the ambition of individual politicians to take precedence over the larger objective of providing voters with a credible alternative.
He said opposition parties needed to identify the qualities they wanted in a presidential candidate and build consensus around a figure capable of appealing beyond the traditional support base of any single party.
According to Banwo, such a candidate would need to combine national appeal with organisational capacity and the ability to bring different political interests together.
He also called for greater cooperation between political parties, civil society groups and other stakeholders interested in strengthening democratic participation.
Banwo said a successful coalition would require more than announcing an alliance shortly before an election.
He stressed that political groups would need to establish working structures well ahead of 2027 and use subsequent elections to test their level of cooperation.
The social critic said the Osun election offered political actors an opportunity to study the importance of alliances, grassroots organisation and voter mobilisation.
He urged opposition leaders to begin the process of building a stronger coalition now rather than waiting until the presidential campaign is fully underway.
Banwo maintained that a credible opposition would need to demonstrate not only political ambition but also the willingness to work together in the national interest.
He said the 2027 election would provide Nigerian voters with competing political choices and urged opposition parties to ensure that their preparations were based on organisation, cooperation and a clear message to the electorate.
According to him, building a durable coalition ahead of the election would require patience, negotiation and a willingness by political leaders to place broader national objectives above individual ambitions.
