Leading with heart and vision: Queen Dr. Josephine Diete-Spiff’s legacy of empowerment
Dame Dr. Josephine Diete-Spiff’s life is a compelling narrative of purpose, passion and perseverance. As the Queen of Twon Brass kingdom in Bayelsa State, she is a shining light of intellectual curiosity, spiritual conviction and community-driven leadership. Her multifaceted role as an evangelist and educationist has left an enduring impact on her communities, reflecting a deep commitment to shaping lives and inspiring positive change.
Her academic path is a remarkable one. A Theatre Arts graduate from the University of Port Harcourt, where she led with distinction as President of the Students’ Union, she pursued a law degree from Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, and became a Barrister at Law in 2007. Her pursuit of knowledge took her to the University of Liverpool, UK, where she earned an MBA, and later, a Doctor of Business Administration from Walden University, USA. Her academic accomplishments have been further recognised with a PhD, Honorary Causa, from Ashland University, Ohio, USA, and she has acquired a graduate certificate in Early Childhood Education from Walden University, USA.
A Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Administration, she has honed her skills as a banker, finance professional and fitness trainer. Over three decades, she has accumulated a wealth of experience, leading organisations and initiatives with aplomb. As Chairperson of Titare Star Royal Academy and Four Time Product Nigeria Ltd, and CEO of Peretogu Integrated Services, she has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to excellence. Her philanthropic endeavours are equally impressive, with the establishment of the HRM Dr. Josephine Alfred Diete-Spiff Foundation, which empowers women and youth.

Continuing Women’s Empowerment and Development in Nigeria
My commitment remains steadfast. Through the Queens of the Niger Delta Initiative and other platforms, we will keep expanding programs focused on education, economic empowerment, and leadership development for women and young girls. We are strengthening partnerships both locally and internationally to build sustainable support systems—scholarships, vocational training, and mentorship opportunities. Our aim is not just empowerment but transformation—raising women who will then empower others.
Foundation’s Notable Achievements and Future Plans
Our foundation has made a meaningful impact by providing scholarships for underprivileged children, promoting sports among young girls to help them become actively engaged, supporting self-reliance programs for widows, and offering food, clothing, housing, and financial assistance to vulnerable families. One of our main accomplishments is creating opportunities where none existed— restoring hope to those nearly losing it. Looking ahead, we plan to expand our initiatives by implementing structured empowerment programs, increasing educational support, girls’ sports, and launching more community-based interventions that foster self-reliance, dignity, and aspirations.
My passion is fueled by a deep sense of purpose and compassion. I have personally observed the struggles of women, widows, and vulnerable children, and I firmly believe that no woman should be kept back by her circumstances. Every life we touch, every girl we teach, and every woman we uplift strengthens my resolve. The awards feel humbling, but the real reward is witnessing lives change and hope come back.
Strategies to Encourage Girls’ Education and Leadership
First, we need to improve accessibility—ensuring every girl has the opportunity to attend school regardless of her background. Secondly, we need strong advocacy and community engagement to change mindsets that limit the girl child’s development. Mentorship is also essential. When young girls see women in leadership roles, they start to believe it’s achievable. Finally, policies must support and safeguard the rights of girl children to education and development.
Increasing Women’s Participation in Politics
Women need encouragement and support to enter political spaces. This involves deliberate mentorship, financial backing, and inclusive policies that open opportunities for women. We also need to change the narrative—women are not just supporters in politics; they are capable leaders and decision-makers. Collective support among women is essential. When women support women, progress becomes unavoidable.
Overcoming Challenges as a Woman in Leadership
Like many women, I have encountered challenges such as societal expectations, gender bias, and the pressure to constantly prove my competence. However, I have overcome these challenges through faith in God, resilience, and a clear sense of purpose. Challenges are not barriers—they are stepping stones. They have shaped me into a stronger and more determined leader.
Advice to Young Nigerian Women Aspiring to Leadership
I encourage young women to be intentional about growth—educationally, professionally, and spiritually. Leadership calls for discipline, resilience, and ongoing learning. Don’t hesitate to take bold actions. Build skills, develop strong values, and surround yourself with supportive mentors. Most importantly, trust in yourself. Your background should not define your future.
