2027: Banwo Questions Whether Peter Obi Offers Better Alternative to Tinubu
Dr. Ope Banwo, Mayor of Fadeyi and founder of Naija Lives Matter (NLM), has raised questions over whether electing Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2027 general election could amount to replacing one uncertainty with another, saying the former Anambra State governor has yet to clearly articulate how his administration would tackle Nigeria’s most pressing challenges.
In a statement titled *”Would Electing Peter Obi Be Like Jumping From the Frying Pan Into the Fire?”*, Banwo said while he remains committed to holding President Bola Tinubu accountable for his administration’s policies and performance, Nigerians must also subject opposition figures to the same rigorous scrutiny before entrusting them with power.
According to him, dissatisfaction with the current administration should not automatically translate into support for an alternative without a clear understanding of that candidate’s policy direction.
Banwo said his greatest concern with Obi ahead of the 2027 elections is what he described as a lack of message clarity, arguing that the former presidential candidate has devoted more attention to criticising the Tinubu administration than explaining how he would govern differently if elected.
He challenged Obi to present detailed policy proposals on insecurity, unemployment, inflation, electricity, industrialisation, agriculture, taxation, the cost of living, foreign exchange management and other critical national issues, insisting that Nigerians deserve concrete answers before they are asked to vote.
“As someone who admired Peter Obi in 2023 and campaigned heavily for him, I still struggle today to identify a detailed alternative policy agenda from him on many of Nigeria’s biggest challenges,” Banwo stated.
The social critic argued that democracy is a contest of ideas rather than personalities, adding that every presidential aspirant must convince voters with practical solutions instead of relying solely on criticism of the government in power.
Banwo also questioned Obi’s reported position on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, saying he would have supported calls to investigate the contract, review the procurement process or renegotiate the project’s cost, but found an outright cancellation difficult to justify in view of the infrastructure’s potential long-term economic benefits.
According to him, the coastal highway could stimulate trade, reduce logistics costs, create jobs, attract investment and unlock economic opportunities across Nigeria’s coastal states if properly implemented.
He maintained that while the project deserves transparency and accountability, cancelling it without presenting a compelling alternative raises concerns about Obi’s broader policy direction.
Banwo further expressed disappointment that many supporters of the former Labour Party presidential candidate respond to requests for policy details with political attacks rather than substantive explanations.
He stressed that his comments should not be interpreted as support for the Tinubu administration, noting that he has consistently criticised the Federal Government and plans to publish a comprehensive assessment of its performance.
“I am not an Emilokan supporter. I am a Naija Lives Matter person. I am for all Nigerians,” he said.
Banwo concluded that Nigerians should enter the 2027 election with a determination to interrogate every candidate’s ideas, warning that replacing one struggling administration with another lacking clear policy alternatives could leave the country no better off.
He said until Obi presents detailed and convincing solutions to Nigeria’s challenges, many voters would continue to ask whether electing him would amount to “jumping from the frying pan into the fire.”
