When Da Amakiri Tubo, Alhaji Mujahid Abubarkr Dokubo-Asari accepted the sacred responsibility of becoming the Amanyanabo of the Source, Elem Kalabari, many saw it as yet another remarkable chapter in the life of one of the Niger Delta’s most influential and recognizable figures. Few, however, anticipated the speed with which the ancient kingdom would begin to reclaim visibility within Nigeria’s cultural, political, and historical consciousness.

Now, as Da Amakiri Tubo, Alhaji Mujahid Abubakar Dokubo-Asari marks his 62nd birthday on June 1, growing attention is focused not merely on the man himself, but on the remarkable transformation unfolding within Elem Kalabari under his reign.

In just two years on the throne, the Amanyanabo of the Source has significantly elevated the profile of the kingdom beyond traditional boundaries, drawing renewed attention to Kalabari heritage, spirituality, identity, and historical relevance. What has emerged is a monarchy that is increasingly cultural in purpose, diplomatic in engagement, intellectual in outlook, and global in reach.

For decades, Elem Kalabari remained one of the Niger Delta’s historically important kingdoms, yet much of its story existed outside mainstream national discourse. Under Dokubo-Asari’s stewardship, there has been a deliberate and sustained effort to change that narrative.

For many indigenes, these efforts represent far more than physical reconstruction. They symbolize the restoration of identity, memory, and continuity.

Traditional ceremonies that once faced decline have witnessed renewed participation, while cultural festivals now carry greater significance among younger generations. Oral traditions, ancestral histories, and indigenous Kalabari customs are increasingly being preserved and transmitted with fresh urgency. Under the Amanyanabo’s leadership, there has been a conscious attempt to reconnect the people of Elem Kalabari to the roots of their civilization and spiritual heritage.

That cultural revival has also elevated the kingdom’s standing within the wider Niger Delta. Today, Elem Kalabari is increasingly regarded not only as an ancient riverine kingdom, but also as an important cultural and spiritual destination for Kalabari people at home and across the diaspora. Researchers, traditional rulers, historians, and cultural enthusiasts now pay growing attention to the Source as a living center of heritage and indigenous continuity.

Beyond cultural restoration, the monarch has pursued an ambitious campaign to restore order, security, and social stability within the kingdom. Determined to protect the waterways and surrounding communities, he established 24-hour sea patrol operations that have significantly curtailed piracy and other criminal activities in the region. Illegal oil bunkering operations that once devastated the fragile ecosystem were dismantled, while drug trafficking networks that had gained footholds within surrounding communities were forced out.

Simultaneously, Elem Kalabari has undergone visible physical transformation. Across the island, large-scale construction projects are redefining the landscape. Massive developments — personally funded by the monarch — include the expansion of the royal palace complex, administrative offices, a magnificent church, an ultra-modern mosque, a hotel, a civic town hall, and numerous residential structures.

The scale of development has steadily transformed the kingdom into what many now describe as a vast evolving construction hub, reflecting not merely a vision of modernization, but an effort to build enduring cultural and institutional foundations for future generations.

Observers note that one of the most distinctive characteristics of Dokubo-Asari’s reign has been visibility. Unlike many traditional rulers who remain largely confined within local spheres, he has projected the stool of the Amanyanabo of the Source onto broader national and international platforms.

His appearances at diplomatic gatherings, cultural events, intellectual forums, and regional engagements have helped reposition Elem Kalabari as a kingdom deeply conscious of both its ancient roots and its contemporary relevance.

That expanding international profile was further demonstrated recently when the monarch joined more than 6,000 dignitaries from across the world in the Benin for the inauguration ceremony of President Ramona Wadagni, following the formal transfer of power by former President Patrice Talon.

Held at the Palais des Congrès in Cotonou, the ceremony attracted heads of state, diplomats, royals, business leaders, and traditional rulers from across Africa and beyond. Throughout the event, the Amanyanabo of the Source was warmly received by fellow monarchs and dignitaries, further reflecting his growing stature within regional and international traditional circles.

His presence at the inauguration was widely viewed as both a reflection of his longstanding personal relationship with the newly inaugurated president and evidence of his rising influence as monarch of Elem Kalabari, Torusarama — the ancient oil-rich kingdom that hosts some of Nigeria’s most strategic oil and gas assets.

Over the past two decades, Dokubo-Asari has cultivated deep ties with the Republic of Benin through educational, cultural, and business engagements. He is the proprietor of King Amachree International Children’s School, an institution that has welcomed students from several African countries, including Ghana, Togo, Congo, and Nigeria, reinforcing his long-standing commitment to Pan-African educational exchange.

Beyond education, he has also maintained substantial investments in real estate, hospitality, and private enterprise within the country, further strengthening his enduring relationship with the West African nation.

Accompanying him on the trip was a distinguished delegation of eminent Kalabari chiefs and respected personalities, including Se-Alabo EMI Membere-Otaji, MD, DSSRS, OON, Chief Executive Officer of Elscon Group and Deputy National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA).

Also present were Se-Opu Alabo Dr. David T. Briggs, Deuin-Ala XII of Kalabari and Paramount Chief of the Ancient Deuin-Ala Chieftaincy House (1968), alongside Prince Tonye T. J. T. Princewill, Da OGO VI, Head of the Queen Elababene/Da OGO Group of Houses of the Kalabari Kingdom.

The importance the monarch places on relationships and diplomacy became even more evident following the inauguration. During his stay in Cotonou, he received the Charge d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy, Ambassador Bukar Kalembe, came on  a courtesy visit. This was followed by separate meetings with prominent Islamic clerics, including Imam Abubarkar of Mosquée Place Bulgari and Imam Quatier Jak Goni Jidda, Chief Imam of the Central Mosque, Cotonou.

Even during the return journey, the level of recognition accorded the Amanyanabo remained remarkable. At the Seme border, he was personally received by Mr. M. A. V. Sessou, Commissar of the Seme Border, before further engagements with senior immigration officials, including Deputy Controller of Immigration E. Nwosuagwu.

From arrival to departure, the Kalabari monarch was accorded VIP treatment typically reserved for senior government officials such as governors and federal ministers. Observers noted that the reception underscored not only his expanding international profile, but also the deep and enduring relationships he has cultivated across diplomatic, political, religious, and traditional institutions over the years.

Within the kingdom itself, his reign has also inspired a renewed cultural awakening among younger generations. There is growing emphasis on preserving Kalabari history, promoting indigenous traditions, encouraging cultural education, and restoring pride in ancestral identity. For many youths, particularly within the diaspora, the throne has become a renewed symbol of belonging and historical continuity.

His leadership style remains distinctive — combining royal authority with outspoken engagement on national issues. Whether addressing the Niger Delta, African identity, cultural sovereignty, or questions of governance and justice, Dokubo-Asari continues to command attention far beyond traditional institutions. Admirers describe him as fearless, intellectually assertive, and deeply committed to the dignity of his people, while even critics acknowledge his enduring influence in national conversations.

Yet perhaps the most significant transformation has been symbolic.
Under his stewardship, the title “Amanyanabo of the Source” has evolved into more than a traditional designation. It now represents cultural assertion, historical memory, institutional revival, and regional pride. In many respects, Dokubo-Asari has sought to transform the throne into both a custodian of heritage and a platform for contemporary relevance.

At 62, his public identity continues to evolve — from activist and political voice to monarch, cultural advocate, and international traditional statesman. It is a transition few Nigerian figures have navigated with such visibility and consequence.

For the people of Elem Kalabari, the past two years have represented far more than a change in traditional leadership. They have marked the beginning of a far-reaching effort to redefine how the kingdom is seen, remembered, and positioned within the wider African story.

Today, on this special day, I celebrate a brother and a friend. I celebrate a national treasure at 62. More Grace. I toast to his continued good health and longevity.
