COAS Waidi Shaibu Earns ISN Praise for Advancing Military Education, Research
The Institute of Security Nigeria (ISN) has commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for what it described as his steady and strategic leadership in consolidating the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) as a centre for military, security and defence education.
In a policy advocacy statement dated July 11, 2026, the Institute said Lieutenant General Shaibu had played a pivotal role in translating the vision behind NAUB into measurable institutional progress.
According to the statement, the Chief of Army Staff has strengthened the alignment between NAUB’s academic programmes and the current and future operational requirements of the Nigerian Army.
ISN said the alignment was critical to ensuring that the university produces graduates and conducts research capable of addressing Nigeria’s evolving security and defence challenges.
The Institute also recognised the role of the COAS in providing institutional support to NAUB, particularly in sustaining the personnel, logistics and funding required to maintain academic and training standards
It further credited Lieutenant General Shaibu with deepening collaboration between NAUB, Army formations and defence industries to promote practical and solution-driven research.
The Institute said such collaboration would strengthen the link between academic knowledge, military operations and Nigeria’s broader defence requirements.
“Lt. General Shaibu’s commitment has been pivotal in translating the founding vision into measurable institutional progress,” ISN stated.
NAUB was established as a strategic institution for defence education, security research and civil-military capacity building. Its mandate includes specialised programmes and applied research in areas such as intelligence, cybersecurity, engineering, logistics, forensic science and other fields relevant to Nigeria’s changing security environment.
ISN said the continued development of the university was essential to producing a new generation of mission-ready leaders while strengthening indigenous solutions to Nigeria’s security challenges.
The Institute also recommended increased investment in NAUB, including the development of modern laboratories and simulation facilities, faculty development, specialised centres of excellence in counter-terrorism and cyber defence, and expanded civil-military research.
It further called for greater emphasis on ethical leadership, innovation and technological self-reliance within the Armed Forces.
The recognition of the Chief of Army Staff comes amid growing emphasis on professional military education, research, innovation and capacity building as critical components of national security.
ISN reaffirmed its commitment to supporting NAUB through policy research, professional training and advocacy to ensure that the institution continues to fulfil its mandate as a premier centre for security and defence education in Nigeria.
