From Legacy to Leadership: FUAHSE Emerges as Nigeria’s New Frontier for Healthcare Innovation

…… Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Emaimo, Unveils Vision for World-Class Allied Health Education During Press Briefing and Facility Tour

The Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu (FUAHSE), has reaffirmed its determination to become a leading hub for healthcare education, innovation, and workforce development in Nigeria as the institution formally opened its doors to members of the press and stakeholders during a high-profile press briefing and facility tour.

Addressing journalists, management staff, and invited guests, the Vice Chancellor, Professor John Emaimo, described the university as a transformative institution strategically positioned to redefine healthcare training and bridge critical manpower gaps in Nigeria’s health sector.

According to the Vice Chancellor, FUAHSE, established in 2023, represents the culmination of more than seven decades of institutional evolution — transitioning from a modest diploma-awarding dental college into a specialized federal university dedicated to allied health sciences.

He noted that the transformation followed a Presidential approval and directive for conversion, underscoring the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare education and improving healthcare delivery nationwide.

Professor Emaimo explained that the university is focused on producing healthcare professionals who are not only academically grounded but also equipped with practical and industry-relevant competencies capable of addressing emerging realities in modern healthcare systems.

He revealed that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has already approved sixteen core academic programmes for the institution, spanning Clinical Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences, Public Health, Allied Sciences, Engineering, and Technology.

The approved programmes include Nursing Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, Radiography, Dental Technology, Physiotherapy, Public Health, and Biomedical Engineering, among others.

In what observers describe as a bold leap into the future, the university has also secured approval for eleven additional innovative degree programmes, including Biotechnology, Artificial Intelligence, and Software Engineering — disciplines expected to place the institution at the forefront of healthcare-driven technological advancement in Nigeria.

The Vice Chancellor emphasized that FUAHSE’s academic philosophy is deeply rooted in practical and hands-on learning, aimed at producing graduates capable of seamlessly transitioning from lecture halls to real-life healthcare environments with competence, professionalism, and compassion.

As part of efforts to create a world-class learning environment, Professor Emaimo highlighted several ongoing infrastructure projects within the campus, including the construction of a 1,000-seat auditorium, a state-of-the-art library, and a modern ICT complex designed to enhance research, digital learning, and academic excellence.

Despite acknowledging the challenges associated with building a new university — particularly in the areas of funding and infrastructure expansion — the Vice Chancellor maintained that the institution remains unwavering in its pursuit of excellence and innovation.

He further stressed that FUAHSE aligns with the broader national agenda of rapidly expanding Nigeria’s healthcare workforce to tackle shortages in critical medical and allied health professions.

Professor Emaimo described the press tour as an opportunity for the public to witness firsthand the university’s progress, vision, and determination to become a beacon of healthcare education in Africa.

He added that the visit also served as a prelude to the university’s second matriculation ceremony scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026, during which a new set of students would be formally admitted into the institution.

“With the support of stakeholders, the media, and the Nigerian public, FUAHSE is poised to shape a healthier future for the nation through innovation, quality training, and purposeful leadership,” the Vice Chancellor stated.

The event concluded with a guided tour of the university’s facilities, where journalists and guests were taken through ongoing projects and strategic academic development initiatives expected to position FUAHSE among Nigeria’s foremost specialized institutions in healthcare education.
