Lagos Taskforce Warns Against unverified Malicious Publications

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) has strongly condemned the circulation of what it described as an old and maliciously repackaged publication aimed at tarnishing the image of the Agency and discrediting the ongoing reforms instituted within the organisation.

Reacting to a recent online publication, alleging misconduct involving some operatives of the Agency, the Taskforce described the report as a deliberate attempt to revive stale narratives that do not reflect the present realities, operational standards and institutional reforms that have transformed the Agency in recent years.

The Agency noted that while constructive criticism remains essential in a democratic society, it is deeply disturbing that certain bloggers and online platforms have continued to abandon the ethics of journalism and professionalism in pursuit of sensationalism, blackmail and traffic-driven content without proper verification of facts.

According to the Taskforce, the publication in question was not only outdated but deliberately published at a time when the Agency has continued to record notable operational successes and public commendations in traffic management, environmental enforcement and crime suppression across Lagos State.

The Agency stressed that the Lagos Taskforce of today is significantly different from what existed years ago, owing to several internal reforms, personnel retraining exercises, stricter monitoring mechanisms and disciplinary measures introduced by the Lagos State Government and the leadership of the Agency.

It stated that under the current administration, emphasis has been placed on professionalism, respect for human rights, operational accountability and improved public engagement, adding that erring officers found culpable of misconduct are routinely investigated and sanctioned in accordance with extant laws and public service regulations.

The Agency further maintained that it would not allow desperate individuals or compromised bloggers to undermine the sacrifices of hundreds of dedicated officers who risk their lives daily to maintain law and order across the state.

“The deliberate circulation of stale and misleading stories clearly reveals a malicious agenda targeted at discrediting the Agency and creating unnecessary public distrust.

“It is unfortunate that some online platforms now operate without recourse to fairness, balance and professional ethics expected of responsible journalism,” the statement noted.

The Taskforce also decried the growing trend of unverified online publications where allegations are presented as established facts without efforts to seek clarification from concerned institutions before publication.

According to the Agency, such conduct not only violates the basic principles of journalism but also contributes to misinformation capable of inciting public resentment against law enforcement institutions.

The Agency reiterated that reforms introduced within the Taskforce have continued to yield positive outcomes, particularly in the areas of operational transparency, personnel conduct and public complaint resolution mechanisms.

It added that officers and men of the Agency are regularly subjected to ethical orientation programmes and operational reviews aimed at ensuring that activities of the Taskforce align with global best practices in civil enforcement operations.

The Lagos Taskforce also warned that it would no longer fold its arms while individuals and media platforms circulate defamatory and malicious contents intended to damage its institutional integrity.

It disclosed that its legal department has been directed to closely monitor defamatory publications against the Agency and initiate appropriate legal actions against individuals or organisations found culpable of spreading falsehoods, malicious propaganda or intentionally distorted narratives.

“The era where faceless bloggers and unprofessional platforms publish damaging falsehoods without consequences is gradually coming to an end.

The Agency will henceforth explore every legitimate legal avenue to protect its reputation and the integrity of its officers against malicious attacks,” the statement added.

While reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and lawful enforcement operations, the Taskforce urged residents of Lagos State and members of the public to disregard the publication and similar misleading reports being circulated online.

The Agency assured Lagosians that it remains committed to its constitutional responsibilities of maintaining sanity, enforcing environmental laws and supporting security architecture within the state in accordance with the vision of the Lagos State Government.

It further appealed to members of the media to uphold the ethics of responsible journalism through balanced reporting, proper fact-checking and objective engagement with public institutions rather than promoting sensational narratives capable of undermining public confidence.

The Taskforce reaffirmed that it remains open to genuine scrutiny, constructive engagement and lawful accountability, but would firmly resist coordinated campaigns of blackmail, misinformation and reputational attacks orchestrated through the misuse of digital media platforms.
