…….Institution highlights the role of professional training, industry collaboration and entrepreneurship in strengthening Nigeria’s built environment and creative economy.

Interior design is increasingly recognised as an important contributor to Nigeria’s built environment, extending beyond aesthetics to influence the functionality, safety, comfort and value of residential, commercial and public spaces.

From homes and workplaces to hotels, hospitals and educational institutions, professional interior design plays a vital role in improving how spaces are planned, developed and experienced.

Working alongside architects, engineers, builders and real estate developers, interior designers contribute to space optimisation, materials selection, interior finishes and the overall usability and market appeal of properties. Their early involvement in building projects can help minimise costly modifications, improve space efficiency and enhance the quality of housing and commercial developments.

The profession also supports an extensive economic value chain involving furniture manufacturers, artisans, installers, materials suppliers and other service providers, creating employment, encouraging entrepreneurship and contributing to economic activity across Nigeria’s construction, real estate, manufacturing and creative sectors.

Against this backdrop, the *Lagos School of Interior Design (LASID)* has called for stronger industry collaboration, professional standards and practical education to advance the sector’s contribution to national development.

*Strengthening Professional Standards and Industry Collaboration*

Reinforcing this commitment, LASID participated in the just concluded *Design Week Lagos 2026,* where its students and graduates engaged with industry leaders, manufacturers and creative professionals through educational presentations, exhibitions and interactive discussions.

Led by its Managing Director, Norah Ezeoha, the delegation explored emerging design trends, innovative materials, professional practices and the evolving relationship between interior design, construction and real estate development.

Speaking on the experience, Ezeoha emphasised the need for professional competence, ethical practices and stronger collaboration among educational institutions, professional bodies, government agencies and private-sector stakeholders.

“Interior design goes beyond creating beautiful spaces. It influences how people live, work and interact with their environments. Strengthening professional standards and collaboration across the built environment is essential to improving the quality of spaces we create.”

Beyond the educational sessions, LASID engaged with manufacturers, materials specialists and interior solutions providers to explore opportunities for technical learning, industry exposure and professional development.

These engagements build on the institution’s existing industry relationships, which have previously provided students and graduates with practical experience, internship placements and employment opportunities.

*Developing Skilled Professionals and Entrepreneurs*

LASID also highlighted the importance of combining technical competence with entrepreneurship and business development to prepare emerging professionals for the industry’s diverse opportunities.

According to Ezeoha, interior design education should go beyond acquiring creative and practical skills to include the knowledge required to establish, manage and grow sustainable businesses.

“At LASID, we are not just training people to become interior designers or seek employment. We are equipping them with practical skills, business knowledge and an entrepreneurial mindset to create opportunities, establish successful enterprises and become employers of labour.”

The institution integrates hands-on interior design training with project management, client relations, business development and industry exposure, preparing students for employment, independent professional practice and entrepreneurship.

Ezeoha noted that the industry’s opportunities extend beyond interior design consultancy to furniture manufacturing, materials supply, installation services, project execution and other specialised businesses.

By encouraging innovation and enterprise development, the sector can support local manufacturing, create jobs, strengthen small businesses and contribute to Nigeria’s broader economic growth.

*Bridging Education and Industry Practice*

Based in Festac Town, Lagos, LASID provides practical professional training in interior design, project management, 3D visualisation, and Entrepreneurship upported by mentorship, hands-on projects and industry engagement.

Its participation in Design Week Lagos 2026 reflects the institution’s continued commitment to connecting classroom learning with professional practice and exposing emerging designers to the realities and opportunities of the industry.

As LASID strengthens existing relationships and explores further collaborations, its focus remains on developing competent professionals and entrepreneurs who can contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s built environment and creative economy.

For LASID, the future of interior design lies not only in creating beautiful spaces, but in improving lives, developing talent, building sustainable businesses and generating opportunities that contribute to national development.
