Ogun 2027: Hunye Backs Tinubu’s Second Term, Vows Full Local Govt Autonomy
A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State, Hon. Abayomi Semako Hunye, has urged residents of the state to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term, saying the President needs more time to complete the reforms initiated by his administration.
Hunye also pledged that, if elected governor of Ogun State in 2027, his administration would respect the autonomy of local governments and ensure that statutory allocations meant for the councils are transferred directly to them.
The APC aspirant spoke on Saturday at Tube Primary School, Ipokia Local Government Area, during his annual birthday celebration organised by his supporters.
The event attracted supporters and well-wishers from across the 20 local government areas of Ogun State.
Explaining the timing of the celebration, Hunye said his birthday fell on August 6 but he was unavailable at the time, prompting his supporters to reschedule the annual gathering to October.
He said the celebration had become an opportunity to interact with his supporters and appreciate their loyalty and commitment to his political aspiration.
Speaking on the 2027 presidential election, Hunye urged residents of Ipokia and Ogun State to support Tinubu’s re-election, saying the President had demonstrated the political will to take difficult decisions aimed at reforming the country.
Hunye said, “I believe giving President Tinubu a second term is the best way to go. He is trying to reform Nigeria and make sure our resources are properly distributed.
“I have no doubt about President Tinubu’s performance because he has the political will. We can see it in the decisions he has been taking. However, he needs our support to complete the good work he has started.”
On his governorship ambition, Hunye said he remained committed to pursuing his aspiration and would not compromise it through political negotiations.
He, however, said any intervention by President Tinubu should be in support of his aspiration.
The governorship aspirant also promised to prioritise grassroots development if elected, with particular attention to Ipokia and other local government areas across the state.
Hunye said his administration would respect the financial autonomy of local governments by ensuring that funds allocated to the councils were transferred directly to them.
He said, “I will not take any money from the statutory funds allocated to local governments. The local governments will have their money and manage it independently in accordance with the law.”
Hunye added that local government resources should be deployed for the development of communities rather than diverted for other purposes.
He said his vision was to transform Ipokia and other local government areas into centres of meaningful development while ensuring that government programmes and projects reached the grassroots.
The APC aspirant urged his supporters and residents of Ogun State to remain united and committed to what he described as a new political direction for the state.
