The Spectre of 1983: Why Osun 2026 Is a Dangerous Crucible for 2027 By Dare Adelekan
In August 1983, old Ondo State became the flashpoint of Nigeria’s fragile Second Republic. Driven by an obsession to expand its regional dominance ahead of the national political cycle, the ruling National Party of Nigeria (NPN) deployed the full weight of “federal might” to capture the state at all costs. The incumbent Governor, Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), stood in their way alongside a fiercely protective electorate.
When election authorities announced a disputed victory for NPN’s candidate, Akin Omoboriowo, Akure and surrounding communities erupted into tragic violence. The political fabric shredded overnight, lives were lost, and public trust evaporated. Though the judiciary eventually overturned the fraudulent declaration and restored Ajasin, the institutional damage was done. Four months later, the military seized power, terminating Nigeria’s democratic experiment.
Forty-three years later, history’s echo is growing deafening in Osun State.
As political actors prepare for the August 2026 gubernatorial election in Osogbo, the rhetoric radiating from key partisan camps carries the same volatile undertones. The All Progressives Congress (APC) appears determined to reclaim the state by any means necessary, while the ruling administration in the state vows to defend its turf. To seasoned observers of South-Western political history, this tense standoff feels chillingly familiar.
Nigeria’s political class seems perpetually plagued by institutional amnesia. Elections are repeatedly approached not as democratic exercises in civic consent, but as territorial conquests. When ruling machines prioritize capturing a state over persuading its voters, they trigger three destructive dynamics:
The Fallacy of Conquest: Treating a state election as an essential stepping stone for the 2027 general elections reduces citizens to mere pawns on a strategic chessboard.
Institutional Compromise: The pressure exerted on electoral bodies, security services, and local apparatuses in “must-win” states corrodes the public trust necessary for peace.
The Danger of Popular Resentment: South-Western electorates have a long memory. Whenever federal power is brandished as a weapon against local preferences, democratic resistance inevitably follows.
A forced victory is always a pyrrhic victory. A mandate secured through intimidation, electoral sleight of hand, or state coercion yields no genuine authority—only a unstable governance structure haunted by illegitimacy.
The road to the 2027 general elections runs directly through Osun in 2026. If the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies permit a breakdown of neutrality, or if partisan leadership refuses to rein in dangerous “win-at-all-costs” declarations, the consequences will ripple far beyond the borders of Osun State.
Democracy survives only when political actors accept that losing an election is preferable to destroying the system that makes elections possible. History does not repeat itself because it wants to; it repeats itself because politicians refuse to change. The tragic lessons of Ondo in 1983 stand as a stark warning. The political class must choose whether to learn from that shadow or walk blindly back into its darkness.
