Vice President Shettima Attends Buratai Daughter’s Wedding, Advocates for Families Rooted in Virtue
Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on Nigerian families to uphold the core values of honesty, patience, and compassion, describing them as the foundational pillars for enduring marriages and a peaceful society.
The Vice President made this appeal on Saturday while attending the wedding reception of Aishatu Tukur Buratai, daughter of former Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (retd.), and her husband, Malam Umar Abba Zoru. The event was held at the Tukur and Tukur Farm along the Abuja–Keffi Road in Nasarawa State.
The ceremony drew a distinguished gathering of senior government officials, military officers, traditional rulers, and prominent national figures.
In his address, VP Shettima emphasized that marriage is a vital institution for nurturing responsible citizens and stable communities. He stressed that the virtues essential for nation-building are first cultivated within the family unit. “I charged families and communities to promote the values of honesty, patience, and compassion, for it is at home that these values are tested every day,” he stated.
Reflecting on the Islamic perspective, the Vice President noted that the faith regards marriage as “half of religion” because it provides the daily crucible for character development. “Our faith describes marriage as half of religion, and I have always understood why. It is at home that patience, honesty, and mercy are tested daily, far from the applause of strangers,” he said.
Shettima congratulated the newlyweds and commended both the Buratai and Zoru families for their dedication to discipline, service, and moral integrity. “Today, we celebrate Aishatu and Umar, and the families that raised them. Both households are known for service, discipline, and restraint,” he added.
The wedding marks a significant milestone for the family of Lt. Gen. Buratai, who served as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff from 2015 to 2021 and remains a highly respected retired military officer. Since leaving office, he has continued to contribute to national and international security efforts, earning recognition for his work in counterterrorism, military reforms, and strategic diplomacy.
Guests described the reception as a colorful and memorable occasion, offering prayers for the couple’s prosperous union and continued peace in their new home.
